BASIC WINDOW FRAMINGIf there is no existing rough opening, construct anopening like Figure 1, 1/2 larger in height andwidth than the window to be used. If there is anexisting rough opening, order a window 1/2 smallerin height and width. The rough opening should looksimilar to Figure 1.No window should be installedwithout a proper header and sill support. All framingshould be in compliance with local codes.Figure 2 shows the completed rough opening.Sheathing can be plywood, or structural insulationboard. The important consideration is that the win-dow can be nailed through the sheathing material tosolid framing - the header, rough sill, and jack studs.Method A and BThere are two basic methods of flashing: Method A wherethe Weather Resistive Barrier is applied after the windowis mounted, and Method B where it is applied beforewindow mounting. These instructions focus on methodB with brief reference to the A method. Either way thebottom line is divert the environmental water, drain anythat makes its way inside, and dry whatever is left.
